Fifth-wheel RVs are less likely to detach from the tow vehicle than those towed by rear bumper hitches. They have little side-to-side sway due to the stability of the hitch.
Bolt the fifth-wheel RV hitch through the truck bed and into the frame of the truck to tow it safely. A properly installed fifth-wheel hitch is located either directly over the rear axle or a couple of inches in front of it. An improperly installed hitch can cause severe damage to the tow vehicle and result in hitch failure.
Large pickups or medium-duty trucks are best suited for fifth-wheel RV towing. A pickup truck should not tow an RV exceeding 14,000 lbs. --- even if the hitch, transmission and engine are rated for greater amounts. Pickup trucks do not have the braking capacity to stop loads in excess of 14,000 lbs. safely.
