How to Tow a 5th Wheel Camper

Most sport-utility vehicles, vans and trucks can tow a 5th wheel camper. The matter is a question of what type of car you are driving, what type of 5th wheel camper you want to tow and whether the two are compatible.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your vehicle's owner's manual and determine what type of hitch you have and what you can tow with that type of hitch. The owner's manual will list the tow rating, which is the maximum size and loaded weight that your vehicle is capable of towing.

    • 2

Check your 5th wheel camper and ensure that it is capable of being towed by your car. Ensure that the camper's size and weight will not exceed the limits set forth in your car's owner's manual. If the 5th wheel camper exceeds your car's capabilities, you will need to borrow or rent a vehicle capable of towing the camper.

    • 3

Remove the ball hitch from your car and back up your vehicle to the front of the camper so that the tow hitch hole is aligned and directly beneath the camper's front hitch hole.

    • 4

Lower the camper onto your vehicle's tow hitch and slide the ball hitch into the hole. Secure the ball hitch by tightly screwing the bolt at the bottom of the ball hitch. The camper and the vehicle are now connected and can be towed.

    • 5

Drive at moderate speed and avoid sudden stops and starts. Once the camper is attached, towing the camper is simply a matter of driving your car in a safe and reasonable matter. Practice towing the camper before heading out onto the main roads.
