How to Reduce Tongue Weight on a 5th Wheel Trailer

The weight of a fifth-wheel trailer ranges from 8,000 to 16,000 lbs. without your personal items such as food, clothing and other accessories. The weight allowed on the tongue is 15 percent of the trailer weight before loading. Some fifth-wheel trailers are manufactured with the bedroom sitting over the tongue hitch. If you find you have more weight than is safe, consider shifting the weight.

Set the tongue of the fifth-wheel trailer onto a scale to measure the weight. Alternatively, use a bathroom scale to weigh yourself and make a note of your weight.
