How to Pull a Fifth Wheel Trailer

Many camping enthusiasts have fifth wheel campers, which are campers that are connected to the bed of a pickup instead of a trailer hitch. This enables better stability while pulling and also allows for bigger campers to be pulled. Attaching and pulling fifth wheel campers requires certain steps that are quite easy, once you have performed them. Always follow the particular camper's manual before hooking up and driving.

Instructions

    • 1

Hook the the camper to the pickup according to the manufacturer's direction manual. Test all the electrical lights, such as running lights, brake lights and turn signals. Never try to pull a camper if the lights do not work, it will be hazard on the roadway.

    • 2

Make sure there are no oncoming vehicles in the immediate vicinity when pulling onto the roadway. Pull out slowly, avoiding curbs by swinging wide, and increase speed slowly.

    • 3

Leave adequate space between other vehicles to make it safer while pulling a fifth wheel. Use turn signals well in advance of turning. This will allow other drivers to slow down or move past you before you turn. Do not turn too close to the corner. Remember how long your vehicle is, and move over to the left and turn wide, like a truck, for the back end to clear the corner.

    • 4

Use the side mirrors on the truck for looking behind you and down the side of the vehicle and camper. Never try to pass someone without using these mirrors to look down the side of the camper and pickup to make sure no one is beside you in the next lane, before attempting to pass.

    • 5

Keep your speed lower than normal; do not pull a fifth wheel at high speeds. Refer to the operator's manual and traffic laws for maximum speed allowance. Do not impede traffic. Many times you will be slower than other traffic. Common courtesy and safety dictates that you do not drive in the passing lane. This obstructs the flow of traffic.

Chock the wheels on both the vehicle and camper with a brick to brace the wheels when parked. This will ensure the vehicle will not roll if parked on an incline.
