How to Install a Hitch on the Rear of a Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer

Campers who can't bear to leave their kitchen sink at home travel in a recreational vehicle. RV enthusiasts who can't bear to camp without a boat or a car bring those items along, too. When a truck hauls a fifth-wheel camper or travel trailer as well as another vehicle or a boat behind the camper, it's called triple towing. Campers who want to triple tow will need to install a receiver hitch on the back of their RV.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet wrench
  • Jacks (1 or 2)
  • Jack stand

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure there's enough light for you to see under the camper.

    • 2

Jack up the fifth wheel, if necessary, in order to access the underside of the vehicle more easily.

    • 3

Locate any pre-drilled bolt holes that might already exist underneath the camper.

    • 4

Drill holes to match those in the receiver hitch, if pre-drilled holes do not already exist in the fifth wheel's frame.

    • 5

Stick two carriage bolts through the holes in the fifth wheel's frame, pointing the bolts downward.

    • 6

Set aside two carriage bolts nearby for entry through the receiver hitch.

    • 7

Place the receiver hitch in position. If the hitch is heavy, use a jack to help support it.

    • 8

Stick a washer and nut on the downward-facing bolts from the fifth wheel's frame through the receiver hitch. Tighten nuts with a wrench on each side of the hitch.

    • 9

Stick two carriage bolts upward from the receiver hitch through the fifth wheel's frame.

    • 10

Stick a washer and nut on the bolts and tighten nuts with a wrench.
