How to Install a CB in Your Travel Trailer

Travel trailers, also known as trailer RV vehicles, provide most of the comforts of home in a very mobile package. Unfortunately, a CB radio isn't included in most travel trailers. CB radios generally operate using 12-Volts DC (direct current), which is the type of electricity in most automotive electrical systems, whereas power generators in a travel trailer typically generate 120-Volt AC (alternating current). With this in mind, there are only a small handful of conditions that must be met to use your CB in your travel trailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill with drill bit set (with a 1/8-inch bit included)
  • CB radio with provided mounting hardware (bracket, washers, screws)
  • Screwdriver set
  • 12-Volt DC 30-amp power supply

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an area in your travel trailer where you desire to mount your CB radio. The absolute best location would be a reasonably thick, flat wooden surface, with the flat surface of the CB radio bracket facing down against the surface, and the radio mount hooks pointing upwards.

    • 2

Lay the flat side of the CB radio mounting bracket down onto the counter surface where you will be mounting the radio, and then use a pencil to make a small dot in the center of each of the bracket's screw holes. Move the bracket off to the side.

    • 3

Plug in your drill into a nearby wall outlet in your travel trailer and install a 1/8-inch drill bit into the drill. Drill a shallow hole into each of the pencil marks you previously drew onto the surface. Since these are only pilot holes to assist you with installing the bracket mount screws, these don't need to be very deep--1/8-inch deep should work for you.

    • 4

Place the CB radio mounting bracket, flat-side down, over the pilot holes, paying close attention to the direction in which the CB radio will be facing. Place the bracket so that the CB radio slides into the bracket so that the control panel is facing you. Once positioned, use a screwdriver and fasten the bracket firmly to the counter surface.

    • 5

Plug in a 12-Volt DC, 30-amp power supply into the nearest trailer wall outlet receptacle and position the power supply as close to the CB radio as possible. Connect the end of the black wire coming out of the CB to the negative (-) terminal of your power supply, and connect the end of the red wire of the CB to the positive (+) terminal of the power supply.

    • 6

Connect your CB antenna to your CB radio and then turn on the power of the power supply and the CB radio and operate the radio as you normally would.
