How to Attach a Ladder to a Fifth Wheel

A fifth wheel trailer is a long and heavy camper that attaches to the bed of a towing truck. These campers are self-contained units with shower, bathroom, kitchen, sleeping quarters and entertainment areas. If you need to transport a ladder along with the trailer, strap it to the side of the fifth wheel via a system of ladder racks and locks, much like a fire engine's ladders. Install these racks and locks yourself with some power tools and a half day's time.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 fire engine-style vehicle ladder racks with locks
  • Measuring tape
  • Marker
  • Closed-cell foam paddling
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Set the ladder to be mounted on the ground and measure the distance between the third rung on both sides. Mark the non-door side of the fifth wheel at these measured distances below the windows on the trailer side.

    • 2

Place the ladder rack onto the end of the marked distances and mark the attachment screw holes for the racks. Drill the holes and then screw the racks to the side of the fifth wheel. Apply silicone caulk to the screws and around the screw heads to add further security and a watertight seal.

    • 3

Below the racks -- 2 feet in from each other -- set the ladder locks onto the side and mark the mounting holes. Drill the lock holes and screw the locks into position. Add caulk to the screws and let them dry. The locks slide around a ladder rung and add tension to it, thus preventing the ladder from flying off.

    • 4

Place the ladder onto the racks so the rack arms are at the third rung in on each side. Bring the lock arms up around the fourth or fifth rung in from the rack arm and lock the hitch to secure the ladder to the fifth wheel. Wrap the ends of the ladder with the foam and duct tape to prevent injury if someone walks into the ladder ends.
