How to Attach a Trailer Jack to a Trailer

A trailer jack attaches to the trailer arm and uses a retractable arm with a wheel on the bottom to lift and lower the trailer when hitching it to a tow vehicle. These jacks typically have a hand crank that provides the mechanical advantage to lift the heavy trailer and the trailer contents up. If your trailer does not have a jack, install one yourself to make the hitching and unhitching easier. Have a helper ready to assist with the installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Chocks
  • Trailer jack mounting bracket (typically included with the trailer jack)

Instructions

    • 1

Place wheel chocks under each tire on the trailer to prevent the trailer from moving during the installation. Hitch the trailer to the tow vehicle to raise it for the installation process.

    • 2

Place the attachment bracket under the trailer arm, about a third to halfway between the arm and the trailer itself. Locate the jack screw holes under the trailer and align the mounting bracket holes to the trailer arm holes. Have your assistant hold the bracket in place.

    • 3

Screw in the attachment bolts to the bracket with the adjustable wrench. Tighten as much as possible.

    • 4

Mount the jack itself onto the bracket. Each jack maker has different mechanisms and attachment points; follow the kit's instructions. However, be sure to have the jack so it faces toward the trailer. This makes the folding easier when retracting the jack onto the bracket.

    • 5

Tighten all bolts for the jack onto the bracket to secure into place. Test the jack by unhinging and pushing to the ground and then retracting to ensure the mechanisms are installed properly.
