How to Wire an RV Trailer Plug

Camping is a pastime enjoyed by many travelers around the world, especially when done with the comfort of an RV. Bringing an RV along on a camping trip allows you to bring all the creature comforts of home along with you, such as hot water, air conditioning, a stove and a bed. All of these things run off of electricity though and whether at your campsite or at home you need to plug the RV into an electrical source for power. If your RV plug has worn out over time, you can rewire a new plug in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the old plug off of the end of the length of cord with wire cutters or a utility knife. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to take apart the new plug using a screwdriver. Unfold the two halves of the plug and insert at least six inches of cord through the housing on the plug.

    • 2

Strip off all the insulation with the utility knife and use the knife to separate the wires on the inside of the cable. Start the split with the knife and then separate the two wires down at least two inches by pulling them apart gently after the cut has been started. Take wire strippers and strip at least ½ inch off the end of the wires.

    • 3

Twist the bare wire strands together, separately, so that each end of the wire forms a loop. Attach these loops to the terminal screws on the plug. White or ribbed wires attach to the silver terminal while the black wire attaches to the brass terminal. Connect any accompanying ground plug to the green terminal screw.

    • 4

Reassemble the screw casing and plug the RV into an electrical outlet to test the cord and new plug.
