How to Adjust a Fifth Wheel Kingpin Height

You may need to adjust the height of a fifth-wheel kingpin when moving or leveling a trailer. Fifth wheel kingpins are mounted in the front of the trailer. The trailer is supported in the front by two adjustable jacks. These jacks can be raised or lowered to change the height of the kingpin. Most trailers have electric motors for adjusting the kingpin height. Trailers also have a hand crank that can adjust the kingpin height.

Locate the toggle switch that powers the electric jacks on the front of the fifth-wheel trailer. Push the toggle switch forward to raise the kingpin height. The toggle switch must be pushed backward to lower the kingpin height on most trailers.

Plug the trailer's electric-brake cable into the receptacle on the back of the tow vehicle if the trailer battery is dead. This allows the electric jacks to draw power from the tow vehicle. The electric jacks normally run off the battery in the trailer. The trailer battery must be charged to power the electric jacks.

Rotate the jackstand handle clockwise to raise the kingpin height. Rotating the jackstand handle counter-clockwise lowers the kingpin height. The hand crank can be used to manually adjust the height of the trailer kingpin. The hand crank is located at the front of the trailer, near the jackstands.
