How to Unhook a 5th Wheel RV

So you are ready to head out on the open road in your very own recreational vehicle. You have your clothes, your food and your map at the ready. Before you start your adventure, however, read on to learn how to safely unhook your truck from your fifth wheel recreational vehicle. Doing so can save you time, money and frustration. Following a set of guidelines each and every time you unhitch your trailer will ensure that you don't make any mistakes.

  • Fifth-wheel receiver
  • Fifth-wheel recreational vehicle

    • 1

      Pull into your campsite and park your trailer where you will want it to be.

      Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the fifth-wheel recreational vehicle's wheels.

      Drop the trailer's parking assist. These parts are sometimes referred to as "landing gear."

      Disconnect all cables running from the truck to the trailer. This includes the electrical hookup.

      Drop the truck's tailgate.

    • 6

      Place your truck into reverse. This will allow the fifth wheel kingpin to move off the locking bar.

      Shift the truck into neutral.

      Apply the truck's brake.

      Apply the truck's parking brake.

      Disengage the kingpin locking bar on the hitch.

      Slowly drive away from the fifth wheel RV.

      Close the truck's tailgate.
