How to Load Your Uhaul

Uhaul trailers are recognized by the white, yellow and red colors, often with colorful representations of state or province sight-seeing items emblazoned on the sides. Uhaul cargo trailers hitch into a receiver on the towing vehicle and are designed to haul gear and goods. For safety and efficiency, UHaul recommends loading the trailer in a certain pattern to distribute weight evenly in the cargo area.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the rear doors and pull down the loading ramp. Begin loading the gear, boxes and cargo into the trailer up the ramp. UHaul recommends the trailer be loaded to the front first, with 60 percent of the weight placed toward the front of the trailer wheel wells.

    • 2

Pack the trailer so weight is placed symmetrically side-to-side. For example, if you have four tires to haul, place two to the left and two to the right, so there is even weight on each side.

    • 3

Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter weight boxes or freight on top to prevent damage to the boxes and goods.

    • 4

Reference your tow vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR) found on a sticker inside the driver door. Do not overload the trailer past these recommendations. Add the weight of your vehicle, trailer and cargo to get the gross weight. Add the trailer and cargo weight for the axle weight.

    • 5

Do not load any cargo on the exterior of the UHaul trailer as this causes dangerous swaying side-to-side. Lash down all interior cargo to the trailer side loops using bungees, ropes and ratchet straps. UHaul has lashing kits available for use.
