How to Tow a Nissan

Towing a car may be necessary for any number of reasons. Whether taking a vehicle cross country or transporting it because of an automobile accident, towing a car is often quite necessary. Towing a Nissan demands certain automotive adjustments before the car is hauled to ensure a safe and successful transport. Failure to fully and accurately follow instruction manual directions on your specific Nissan model can result in damage. Use a tow dolly and an assistant to efficiently and successfully complete your tow.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the safety pin on the tow dolly. Twist the prefabricated handle until the tire platform lowers.

    • 2

Remove tire straps from the platform surface.

    • 3

Slowly drive the front tires of your automobile onto the tire platform surface. Use the help of an assistant to guide your drive. If your Nissan is automatic, put it in "Park." If it is manual transmission, put it in first gear. Be sure to activate the parking brake. Turn the car off. This temporary step is important for both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.

    • 4

Loop the tire straps over each tire. Repeatedly pull up and press down on the dolly ratchet handle until each tire strap is completely snug and immovable.

    • 5

Link the tow dolly security chain around the front axle on the underside of your Nissan. Lock the chain in place, leaving about 12 to 18 inches of slack. The slack allows for proper suspension activation and rotation when the towing is in progress.

    • 6

Undo the parking brake. Place the car into "Neutral." All Nissan's -- manual or automatic -- must be in neutral gear to ensure a safe tow and no damage to the transmission.

    • 7

Tow the Nissan at a maximum of 50 mph for 500 miles. Turn the vehicle on and allow it to idle for two minutes, every 500 miles, to avoid transmission and alternative engine problems.
