Instructions

    • 1

Determine the towing capacities of your vehicle and the trailer you've chosen.

According to Edmunds.com, "a Ford Crown Victoria...or Chevy Caprice is a basic minimum for towing anything approaching the weight of a 2,000-pound trailer." In general, you'll need a pickup truck or something larger for anything over 2,000 pounds.

    • 2

Attach the trailer or vehicle to your hitch. Bring the nipple of the hitch up through your trailer.

    • 3

Lock the trailer into place with the switch or metal arm. Set the pins to hold the tow in place.

    • 4

Attach a chain for added safety. Wrap the chain around both hitches and then attach it to a portion of your truck. If possible, hook the ends into your bed and onto the trailer.

    • 5

Check to make sure the vehicle is secure. Drive slowly down a side street and watch or feel how it moves. Stop to re-secure if you notice a problem.

    • 6

Start off cautiously on your trip across Ohio. Watch in the rear view for any signs of distress from the hitch or trailer.
