How to Unhook a Lowboy

Hauling certain kinds of heavy equipment like cranes and other earth-movers is best-suited for the lowboy, flatbed open trailer. Safely securing the trailer's cargo takes practice and guidance, but hooking and unhooking the trailer to your semi tractor with its hydraulic control levers isn't nearly as difficult, since most models are made with a "goose-neck" control that simply lowers the trailer directly to the ground. Follow a few simple steps to unhook the lowboy from your semi, then lower the unit to the ground and drive or pull your equipment off the front.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the tractor-trailer on level ground, turn off the engine and set the parking brake.

    • 2

Lower the lowboy trailer to the ground with the first in a series of hydraulic levers on your hitch controls, on the driver's side of the cab. This positioning may vary, depending on your lowboy's manufacturer, so consult your trailer's manual if the lever isn't labeled.

    • 3

Flip the trailer release knob, marked or identified in your manual, once the trailer is resting completely on the ground.

    • 4

Drive the tractor away from the trailer.

    • 5

Unhook the heavy equipment being towed, then drive it or haul it off the front ramp of the lowboy trailer.
