How to Choose a Tractor Trailer

A tractor-trailer is a freight-carrying trailer that is attached and pulled by a towing engine. The towing engine, the truck, also called a "semi", can be detached and reattached from trailers at a central pivot point above the rear axle of the towing vehicle. When deciding which tractor-trailer to use to get the job done, the most important consideration comes from what is going to be transported.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a type of trailer: refrigerator truck for perishables, box truck, bus, dry bulk, dump truck, a tanker for liquids or some bulk dry goods, a flatbed truck for high or wide shipments, car hauler, or a lowboy which has a secondary lower level that rides closer to the road, often used to carry taller loads.

    • 2

Choose your truck. There aren't many big manufacturers of large-haul semi-trucks; Freightliner, Sterling, Mack, Kenworth, Peterbilt, and Volvo. All of these trucks will come with the same hitch to attach the specified trailer for the particular cargo.

    • 3

Choose a trailer brand. Trailer manufacturers develop separately from truck manufacturers. Some trailer companies include Doonan, Heil, Fontaine, J and J, and Great Dane, to name a few.

    • 4

Find a dealer or private party to purchase a semi-truck and a trailer from. Rental agencies are also readily available.
