Approach the scale with your truck and trailer in a straight line and in the proper direction. If the scale does not specify which side to enter from, look for the smallest platform. This will be the last one you will drive onto and will be at the far end of the approach.
Pull onto the scale slowly until your truck has reached the furthest platform with the steer tires and stop.
Look in your mirrors to assure that all of the vehicle's other axles are all the way on the scale platform and not off the sides or rear to cause an inaccurate reading of the weight. Assure that tandem axles are positioned on the same scale platform, and not splitting onto two.
Call the weigh master using the device provided to confirm completion. Scales will have two-way speakers or a phone to call the truck stop desk. Use your CB radio on a channel specified on a sign if needed. Set your brakes, walk into the scale house or truck stop and request your weights if none of these are available.
Adjust your axles or freight to meet DOT guidelines on what is legal in the state you will be driving in, and reweigh by repeating the process if necessary to get the correct weight on each axle.
