How to Tow Early GMC Motorhomes

GMC motorhomes are Class A style recreational vehicles. These rigs are no longer produced but are sought after by aficionados. Despite the fact the motorhomes were made in the 1970s and early 1980s, they look futuristic even today. If you have located an old GMC motorhome and need to tow it to a shop to be worked on you need a large towing vehicle. If using a personal truck, make sure it is a full-size pickup with a large engine that can handle the weight of the GMC rig.

Instructions

    • 1

Back the towing vehicle up to the front of the GMC motorhome. Run two 6-inch nylon tow straps to the tow hooks under the front bumper on the GMC rig. Use the metal tow hooks to attach to the hooks.

    • 2

Place the GMC motorhome into neutral and make sure the steering wheel is active. Test all lights on the motorhome. Assign an assistant to stand behind the rig while the brake lights and signals are tested to ensure it is safe with lighting.

    • 3

Secure the straps and any tow mechanisms proprietary to the tow truck. Have the assistant sit in the driver's seat of the GMC motorhome to control the steering and braking as the rig is towed. Turn on the hazard lights during the towing.

    • 4

Tow the GMC to the desired location using the flattest route possible. Do not exceed speeds of 45 MPH and have the assistant anticipate any and all braking as the rig will be heavy and unresponsive in the neutral position.

    • 5

Check with local law enforcement on legalities regarding the towing of the rig on highways. You may need to stick to rural routes or side roads versus main highways.
