How to Control Mold on an RV Awning

A moldy RV awning is difficult to clean and sometimes must be thrown away. It's important to be proactive when dealing with mold on RV awnings. Try to control the problem before it happens, or before the mold gets too bad. RV awnings are vulnerable to mold because they often are exposed to rain and moisture, and the awning material is a good host to molds. Mold and mildew spread quickly and can cause health problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll the awning and check closely for any mold or mildew. Clean immediately with household cleaners. Check the awning often for mold.

    • 2

Lower one arm of the awning during rain storms so the awning slopes and rain slides off and doesn't build up on the awning.

    • 3

Close the awning after rain only when it's dry. If you must close it to travel while it's still wet, open the awning as soon as you reach your destination.

    • 4

Open the awning at least once every few weeks. Air circulation is important to controlling mold and mildew.

    • 5

Store your RV in a climate-controlled building when it is not in use. This helps prevent mold and mildew on the awning.
