How to Install & Maintain RV Awnings

On an extremely sunny or rainy day, campers appreciate an awning on their RV. New models come with the option of an awning built in, but if your RV does not have an awing attached to it, you can easily add one yourself. Once you add an awning, it will last for a long time if maintained properly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. To Install

    • 1

Attach the awning to the top rail. Unroll the awning.

    • 2

Pull the awning tube down and toward you, unrolling it while doing so.

    • 3

Slide the upper awning arms in place. Hold the upper arm tight with one hand.

    • 4

Use the tension knobs to adjust the tension on both of the arms.

    • 5

Unfold the support legs. Place them on the floor. Mark where they will be located and drill holes where the bottom brackets are to be mounted. This is where the support legs are aligned to the bottom of the RV.

    • 6

Mount the brackets by screwing them into the RV where the holes were marked and drilled. Attach the legs to the brackets using the cotter pins that come with the awning.

    To Maintain

    • 7

Open the awning completely and wash with a soft brush, mild soap and water. Do this on both the top and bottom of the awning.

    • 8

Rinse with a hose and let the awning air dry.

    • 9

Check that all the bolts and screws are tight.

    • 10

Check for broken rivets. These are rivets with missing heads. If you find one, you must replace it; remove the old one by pulling it out, and add a new one using a rivet gun.
