How to Install an RV Satellite Dome

RV satellite domes can be "moving satellites" that allow you to get satellite television or radio while your rig is in motion. Unlike their more bulky "dish" cousins, domes are less conspicuous and take up less room on the top of your RV. Several different companies now make dome satellites that come with detailed instructions for hooking up your television to the dome, but the basic installation is the same for most standard brands.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill and long 3/4-inch drill bit
  • Lag screws or toggle bolts
  • Fasteners
  • Weatherproofing caulk

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location to place the dome on the top of your RV. Place it as close to the television in your rig as possible. Dome manufacturers recommend you place the dome along the mid line of the RV, spaced evenly from left to right. If you have an air conditioner or other feature on the top of your RV, be sure to space your dome a foot or more away from it to avoid interfering with the signal.

    • 2

Fasten the dome to the roof by drilling holes in the roof of your RV and attaching the dome to it with lag screws, toggle bolts, or whatever works best for your type of roof material. To minimize wind and water damage, be sure cord connector ports are placed facing the back of the RV.

    • 3

Connect the coaxial cable to the dome unit. Drill a 3/4-inch hole into the roof of the RV using a long drill bit. Drill through to the inside of the RV, near the location of your entertainment center and then feed your coaxial cable into the hole.

    • 4

Place several fasteners along the length of the cable on top of the RV to keep the cable from flapping around.

    • 5

Connect the cable to the satellite receiver. Plug in your receiver to test the satellite's signal.

    • 6

Seal the holes you drilled into the top of the RV with weatherproof caulk. Do not do this step until you are sure that your satellite is working properly, in the event you have to move cables around.
