How to Use ATMs Abroad

ATMs can be found throughout the world, and so long as your card type is accepted in the country, you'll be able to withdraw money from your primary account just like you would back home. Before going abroad with your ATM card, it's important to take a few precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your bank and credit card company before leaving for your trip. A contact number can be found on the back of most cards.

    • 2

Ask the representative if your card's brand, such as Visa, MasterCard or American Express, is accepted in your destination country.

    • 3

Inform the representative that you'll be spending time in another country. If you plan to visit multiple countries, detail your itinerary. Expect to answer a long list of security questions such how large your last deposit was and to what address your account is registered.

    • 4

Change your PIN if it's longer than four numbers. If your PIN is made of letters, be ready to translate them into numbers, as many ATMs abroad do not have letters written on them.
