How to Use ATM Machines Abroad

Travel is one of life's great pleasures, but no matter where you go it pays to be prepared. Carrying large quantities of cash can be very dangerous, and losing your wallet could ruin your whole trip. One of the best ways to travel safely while reducing your expenses is to withdraw cash as you need it using the network of ATMs in your destination country. But even though ATMs are convenient and relatively inexpensive, it is important to use those machines safely.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your bank at least a few weeks before your trip to verify that your ATM card will work in overseas ATMs. Ask to speak to the bank manager, explain where you are going and verify that your card will work in the country or countries you plan to visit. Also ask about any fees that will be imposed when using your ATM card abroad.

    • 2

Contact the hotel where you will be staying to verify that there are ATMs available within a reasonable distance of the property. Many large hotel chains have their own ATMs in the lobbies of their overseas branches.

    • 3

Consider packing a separate ATM card for another bank. Having a backup ATM card and checking account will allow you to continue your trip in the unlikely event your wallet is lost or stolen. You can pack an extra credit card as well, but be sure to contact the credit card company and ask about any cash advance fees they may charge for foreign ATM withdrawals.

    • 4

Use the same commonsense precautions you use with ATMs at home. Never use an ATM in a deserted or poorly lit area, and be aware of your surroundings as you withdraw your cash.

    • 5

Insert your ATM card into the machine and choose "English" as your language. Most ATMs in major tourist destinations provide optional instructions in English for their ATMs.

    • 6

Enter your PIN and select the amount of money you want to withdraw. Confirm your selection and take your cash. The ATM will dispense cash in the local currency.
