How to Use a Laptop Abroad

While the laptop looks the same around the world, the electrical systems that power it are not. Nor is the ability to connect to the Internet necessarily the same overseas. Here are steps to help you use your laptop abroad.

Instructions

    • 1

Know your travel itinerary. This tells you not only what you have to pack in the line of clothes, but also what you need to pack in supplemental computer equipment.

    • 2

Be aware of the electrical systems in various countries. While the United States uses a 110/120-volt system, most of Europe uses a 220-volt system. You will need to pack a power adapter to step the voltage down to what your laptop was designed to handle. You also may need an adapter for the modem jack on your laptop if you plan to access the Internet through a dial-up connection.

    • 3

Carry plug adapters for the countries you plan to visit. Not only is the voltage different, but in many countries, outlet plugs are different as well. Two-prong plugs in the United States are different from two-prong plugs in continental Europe, which are different from plugs in the United Kingdom, which are different from those in Australia.

    • 4

Check whether your current Internet service provider services the part of the world you plan to visit. If so, get the local access numbers you'll need to dial up your service from where you'll be staying. If not, look for a provider who does service that part of the world. Also, be aware that in some countries, such as Spain, Internet service is difficult or spotty at best.

    • 5

See whether and how much your hotel will charge you to connect from the Internet. In some countries, the rate can be exorbitant.

    • 6

Look for Internet cafes. Most of them function the same as in America, where you can access the Internet using your built-in wireless connection or access card.
