How to Use Curry Powder

A Far East concoction of spices, curry powder contains various amounts of coriander, cumin, turmeric, fenugreek and other various flavors. It lends an exotic taste to a myriad of recipes such as curried rice dishes, soups and an array of salads and casseroles. Knowing how to use curry powder at home isn't difficult, but this powerful spice blend packs a punch when overused.

  1. Curried Sauce

      Measure 1 tbsp. of golden curry powder--a common, less spicy curry as opposed to green and red curry powders.

      Add the curry powder to a 2-quart mixing bowl. Stir in 2 cups of warm water to create a thin, watery solution that reeks of the strong curry powder spice.

      Stir in 2 tsp. of cornstarch to thicken the sauce.

      Cook the sauce on top of your stove in a saucepan for 20 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the thick, golden curry sauce to chicken, shrimp or vegetarian dishes.

    Curry Breading

      Add 2 tbsp. of red curry powder to a 2-quart mixing dish.

      Add 2 tsp. each of celery salt, garlic powder and dried, minced onions.

      Add 2 cups of all purpose flour. Mix the contents of the bowl with a fork to thoroughly blend the curry powder throughout the flour. Add the breading mixture to shrimp dishes and other meats.
