California Vineyard Vacations

California has thousands of acres of vineyards where many of the world's finest wines are made. Its many different regions of vineyards each produce a distinct blend of wines. Every year, "tourists visit wine regions throughout California to explore the state's 2,000 wineries and the diverse array of cultural attractions," according to The Wine Institute. A vineyard vacation in California brings wine tastings, gourmet food, scenic lodging, wine festivals and many other entertainment options.

      Each region of California's wine country has different scenery. Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino are examples of the more widely known areas. Northern regions offer rolling hills and mountains, while the central vineyards offer ocean breezes and coastal scenery. The southern vineyards have an ideal climate of sunny days and cool nights, making it an ideal grape-growing location. Some of the area's oldest grapevines grow in the southern vineyards.

      Regions specialize in certain types of wine due to the different climates and soil. Visitors will find a number of wineries or vineyards to suit their palates. Cabernet lovers will want to visit wineries in the Napa, Mendocino and Sierra Foothill regions. Sweeter wines such as Riesling and zinfandel are found in Monterey, Santa Barbara and the Sierra Foothills. Some of the best Sauvignons come from the Santa Barbara and the Sierra Foothills. The regions specializing in chardonnays are Napa and Sonoma.

    • Bed and breakfasts, inns and hotels are located in all regions. Some establishments offer specials and packages geared toward the wine enthusiast, and many offer scenic views of the local vineyards. The Twin Pines Casino and Hotel in the Paso Robles region offers luxury accommodations in a rustic design. A spa resort is another choice in vineyard accommodations. The Silverado Resort & Spa in the Napa region features a number of options to its visitors, such as a fitness center, whirlpools, saunas and garden treatments.

    Dining

    • After a wine tasting, visitors have their choice of numerous dining establishments.

      Wine and food pair nicely together, so California's wine country offers many gourmet dining establishments. French Laundry, one of the most famous restaurants in Napa Valley, serves French-inspired dishes. Owned by chef Thomas Keller, it is located in Yountville, California. While many vineyards and their surroundings house fine dining, visitors on a budget can find many boutique bistros and cafés.

    Activities

    • Redwood forests are near the Napa Valley region.

      After touring regional vineyards and sampling a variety of wines, wine enthusiasts can find many other sources of entertainment. Art galleries, museums, aquariums, forests, golf and shopping are all examples of additional ways to spend your time on a California vineyard vacation. The Paso Robles region is sprinkled with quaint boutiques and farmer's markets. Biking and hiking trails are also available in many regions.
