Coastal Vacations of California

Over the years, California has gained a well deserved reputation as the ideal vacation spot. Whether it be exploring the northern redwood forests or basking in the warmth of a sunny southern beach, there is always the opportunity for destination vacations along California's scenic coastline, complete with local shopping, recreational activities and fine dining.

  1. Beaches

    • California beaches are ideal for vacationing. Southern California offers several prime opportunities for sunbathing and surfing at prime vacation spots such as Huntington Beach, Santa Monica and Malibu. For a different kind of beach experience, wander up the coast to Northern California, where you can visit the breeding ground for the great white shark, just off the coast of Monterey, or purchase saltwater taffy and enjoy the scenic dunes of Bodega Bay.

    Redwood Forests

    • One of Northern California's most famous tourist opportunities is the Redwood National and State Parks, a natural forest of huge redwood trees over a hundred years old. Southern Humboldt's Avenue of the Giants is a tourist destination that showcases the redwoods on a 31-mile drive. Nearby accommodations include the Tides Inn and the Humboldt Gables Motel. For a pleasant afternoon or evening meal, visit local restaurants such as The Avenue Cafe and Tonetta's Coffee and Eatery.

    Hiking

    • Hiking along the coast of California is best done in Northern California, where the terrain alongside the beaches tends to get rockier. Point Reyes is just one hiking destination, with almost 150 miles of hiking trails, campgrounds and miles of stunningly beautiful seashore. Point Reyes also is a cultural center for Native American artifacts. This well-rounded experience will give you a glimpse into the cultural history of California accompanied by a great view and invigorating exercise.
