How to Use an Ezlink Card for a Taxi

The EZ-Link card in Singapore has been helping consumers use public transportation more simply since 2002 and has become used by even more businesses since then. Originally, the card was used for buses and trains. Now it can be used to buy goods, food and lodging in addition to transportation. Paying for a taxi ride with your EZ-Link card costs less than paying with a credit card, so it's a good investment if you'll be spending some time in Singapore.

    • 1

Visit any Passenger Service Centre or TransitLink Ticket Office in Singapore to get your EZ-Link card.

    • 2

Pay $15 to obtain your new card. This will leave you with a $10 travel balance after the $5 card fee. You can also elect to put more money on your card when you first get it--the current limit is $500. You can reload your card with additional money almost anywhere--even 7-Eleven offers top-up cards.

Hail a taxi on the street or call a taxi service to have a car pick you up. Be sure that they accept the EZ-Link card if you do not have another form of payment. (All SMRT taxis are now equipped with card-readers.) Enter the taxi and tell the driver your destination.

Once you've arrived and the trip has been calculated, tap your EZ-Link card against the sensor--or hand it to the driver and have him do it. It should automatically deduct the cost of your trip from your EZ-Link card.
