How to Pay for a Rental Car

Rental cars are almost essential when you're out of town and need a way to get around. In the past, rental car companies would only accept credit cards as payments, but the times have changed. Now, there are a number of ways for you to pay for a rental car.

Instructions

    • 1

Reserve the rental car with your credit card. Many companies require that payment be guaranteed with a major credit card, even if you plan to pay the bill in another way.

    • 2

Check your credit card limit. The rental car company might require immediate credit approval when you reserve the car. That might reduce the remaining amount left on your credit line.

    • 3

Decide how you'll pay for your rental car, and check with the company to make sure it's acceptable. If they take debit cards, restrictions may apply and the company might only accept debit cards that are co-branded with a major credit company.

    • 4

Think twice before using your debit card. The company may put an authorization hold on your card that's even more than the estimated rental cost. Even though the unused amount will be returned to your account, it might be money that you'll miss between the time you make the reservation and when you actually pay for the rental car.

    • 5

Pay with the credit card you used to make the reservation. When you reserve with one card and pay with another, the rental car company must first cancel the transaction on the first card, and then charge the second card. The downside is that you could have an authorization hold on both of those cards for a couple of weeks, until all of the transactions are finalized. You do not run into those problems when you reserve and pay with the same card.

Use a pre-paid voucher. These are specifically designed for that rental car company, and you can get these vouches from an appointed travel agent. Some paperwork might be necessary.
