How to Transfer a Car Rental

Also known as one-way rentals, a car rental transfer begins when the leasee requests to drop off the rented vehicle at a location other than the location from which the lease originated. To complete a transfer, you only need to contact the chosen car rental service provider and speak to an agent. With your rental active in the system, the rental car agent can access your itinerary quickly and make the switch.

Choose the new location to which you want to transfer your rental car. Verify that the location can accommodate your one-way rental by using the provider's website. Click on the "Customer Service" button, and choose the "Change Reservation" help button. Or call the rental company to verify availability at your chosen location.

Provide the confirmation number that appears on your itinerary to an agent at the car rental company. The agent will need it to notify the system that a change has occurred to your account.

Complete the one-way rental request on the service provider's website through the tab for "One-way rentals." Enter your confirmation or license number and fill out the form. Enter the new location and new time of return. Also, read the agreement screen carefully. Or call the service provider and ask to make a rental transfer.

Verify the charges. The most common fee associated with the service is the "drop fee," which varies from provider to provider.

Return vehicle to new location at specified time. Allow yourself plenty of time to have the car rental returned at the new time and location to avoid all penalty fees.
