How to Return a Rental Car

Once you've picked up your rental car and made your planned trip, returning the car is a relatively easy process. Usually you will have the place mapped out and given to you beforehand, so it can be a simple matter of locating the place. Often the return point will be at a train station, bus station or airport.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with the car rental agent when you first pickup the car. Tell her your destination city and ask for options with respect to where you will be able to return the car. If you have to return the car at a different spot from where you rent it, be clear on what the company requires.

Check a map, computer directions or GPS system for the exact location of the drop-off point. Normally, you will have to return the rental car to a particular location within an airport, train station or bus station. You may be asked to return it to the rental office in the city of your destination.

Plan your trip accordingly, so that you can arrive on time to the drop-off point and still have a mode of transportation to get you where you need to go. Plan for delays and unexpected occurrences; the stress of trying to find a specific spot in an unfamiliar city is lessened the more familiar you are with directions and alternate routes for arriving where you want to go.

Drive carefully from the point of origin to the drop-off point. The agent or a representative will most likely do a walk-around of the vehicle with you to check for any damage to the car's body, finish or interior. If you're in a hurry, there may be some type of "quick drop-off" service available. Check with your agent when you rent the car at the point of origin.

Keep in mind the timing. When you fill out the rental papers, you agree to return the car within a certain window of time. You need to honor that, or you will be charged an extra day. Also, make sure the car is in the condition that it was in when you first picked it up. Clean it in advance if needed, or you may be charged a fee.
