How to Rent a Car for Out of State Travel

With the increasing cost of car maintenance, many people elect to rent a car for a road trip rather than put the additional miles on their own automobiles. Others need a larger vehicle for their trip than the one they own. If you are traveling out of state, there are a couple of additional items to consider.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your insurance company and determine what your auto coverage is on a rental car. Do not take the rental car company's insurance if you already have sufficient coverage with your own policy.

    • 2

If you feel your auto policy is not sufficient to cover your liability with a rental car, check with your credit card companies to see if any offer additional rental car coverage for using that card to rent the car.

    • 3

Contact the rental car company of your choice and make sure it allows out-of-state travel. Ask about the additional charges for out-of-state travel. You should always compare the price of several different companies before committing.

    • 4

Allow plenty of time at the rental car company for processing your paperwork. Bring your driver's license, credit card and proof of insurance to present to the sales associate.

    • 5

Sign the contract, collect the keys and enjoy the ride.
