Check your cable to make sure that it does not have any frays or kinks before embarking on your trip.
Wear gloves while working with your winch.
Have anchor points in the front and rear of the rig.
Gather a tree strap, "D" shackles, 3/8 inches of chain and a quality pulley block that is rated at twice the capacity of the winch.
Anchor your rig to another rig or a tree if you're winching one rig to another rig. You can also use a specially made winch anchor.
Cover the cable while you are winching with a heavy coat, towel or blanket.
Rewind the cable, whenever you complete a trip, put on a new cable or purchase a new winch.
Let the cable fall flat on the ground and run to its anchor point.
Using your determined anchor point, winch the rig to it and be sure that there are no gaps between the cable as it winds up and stiffens.
