How to Obtain a Passport Card

Introduced in 2008 as part of the Department of Homeland Security's antiterrorism efforts, the passport card is an alternative to the traditional passport book. It's a high tech card embedded with a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip. A passport card is not a complete substitute. It can't be used for international airline travel, for example. A passport card is valid for entry into the United States from most Caribbean nations, the Bahamas, Canada and Mexico. If your international travel is limited to the Caribbean and North America, it's a convenient and less expensive option.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply to obtain a passport card as a renewal if you are eligible (see Step 2). You must have your most recent passport, and it must be no more than 15 years old, undamaged and issued when you were at least 16 years old. Otherwise, you have to apply for a new passport (Steps 3 to 6).

    • 2

Obtain a renewal passport card (if you are eligible) by mail by filling out Form DS-82 and having your signature notarized. You can get a copy of Form DS-82 at the post office or download it from the U.S. Department of State website (see Resource). Include two 2-by-2 inch prints of a recent color photograph, your existing passport and a check or money order for $20. Submit your application by mail to the address listed on the DS-82.

    • 3

Get the required documents to apply for a new passport if you don't meet the renewal requirements. You need a copy of your birth certificate, a valid state-issued ID or military ID, and your social security card. You must supply two 2-by-2 inch prints of a photo taken in the last 6 months.

    • 4

Locate a public acceptance facility where you can apply. These include post offices and other public institutions, such as libraries. You can use the U.S. state department's "Locator" tool to find a public acceptance facility near you (see Resources).

    • 5

Appear in person at the public acceptance facility to submit your application; bring all your documentation with you. Children must appear in person as well to obtain a passport card, regardless of age. If you wish, you can download and fill out the application (Form DS-11) ahead of time (see Resources), but do not sign it. The acceptance agent must witness your signature.

Pay by check or money order. When you are applying for a passport card as a new passport, the fee is $20 ($10 for minors) plus a $25 execution fee for a total of $45 ($35 for minors). By comparison, a passport book costs a total of $100 ($85 for minors). If you want to obtain a passport card fast, you have to pay an additional fee of $60 to expedite your application.
