China's Special Administrative Regions: Hong Kong and Macau

An SAR is a region with high autonomy under Chinese sovereignty (“One Country, Two Systems”). Only two exist:

• Hong Kong – returned 1997; Basic Law guarantees autonomy until 2047.
• Macau – returned 1999; similar arrangement.

They maintain separate legal, monetary, and immigration systems while China handles defense and foreign affairs.
