Where to Study Reiki in Japan: Five Authentic Lineages

Japan, Reiki's birthplace, offers several direct-lineage schools:

  1. Japan Reiki Association (JRA) — Founded 1922 by Mikao Usui. Headquarters in Tokyo. Teaches Usui Reiki Ryōhō from Shoden (Level 1) to Shinpiden (Master). Certification recognized internationally.
  2. Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai — Founded 1931 by Usui's son, Fuji Usui. Closed membership; preserves original precepts, symbols, and oral transmission. Seminars by invitation.
  3. International Reiki Federation (Japan branch) — Global network, multiple lineages (Usui, Karuna, Holy Fire). Open enrollment, multilingual courses.
  4. The Reiki Alliance (Japan) — Non-profit teaching Usui/Tibetan and other styles. Workshops in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka.
  5. Light Reiki Center (Tokyo) — Modern studio, small-group intensives, English-friendly, focuses on daily self-practice integration.

Most require in-person attendance. Book months ahead; Shinpiden often has prerequisites. Bring a notebook, comfortable clothes, and an open mind.
