Most Chinese nationals arrived in the 1960s and 1970s during Albania's alliance with Maoist China following the Sino-Soviet split. Chinese engineers, technicians, and medical teams came as part of Beijing's foreign aid program, assisting with infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare projects. When diplomatic relations shifted after Mao's death and Albania's subsequent isolation, many chose to remain.
Today's community—comprising original migrants and their Albanian-born descendants—has largely integrated while preserving cultural traditions. Mandarin and Chinese dialects persist within families alongside Albanian. Community members predominantly work in trade, restaurant operations, and small businesses, contributing to Tirana's commercial diversity.
Chinese New Year celebrations, traditional cuisine, and cultural associations maintain heritage connections. The community navigates a unique dual identity: fully participating in Albanian civic life while sustaining ties to Chinese language, customs, and values—a testament to Albania's evolving multicultural fabric.
