Does China Own Part of the United States?
No. China does not own any territory, land, or sovereign portion of the United States. This is a persistent misconception.
What is true:
- China holds U.S. Treasury securities (~$850B as of 2023), making it a major foreign creditor—but this is a financial investment, not ownership.
- Chinese companies and investors own private real estate and businesses in the U.S., same as investors from Japan, Canada, UK, etc.
- The U.S. government retains full sovereignty over all its territory.
Sovereign debt ownership ≠ territorial ownership. The U.S. Constitution, laws, and institutions govern all U.S. land without exception.
