Kuala Lumpur comes from Malay: kuala = "confluence" (where rivers meet), lumpur = "muddy." The city sits at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, where early tin miners found rich deposits in the muddy banks. Literally: "Muddy Confluence."
