The Yangtze River Delta: Eastern China's Heartland

The vast majority of eastern China is dominated by the Yangtze River Delta Plain (Changjiang Sanjiaozhou). This massive alluvial plain covers the lower reaches of the Yangtze (Chang Jiang) and includes:

• Shanghai – China's largest city & global financial hub
• Nanjing – Historic capital, Jiangsu provincial capital
• Hangzhou – Zhejiang capital, tech/e-commerce center (Alibaba HQ)
• Suzhou, Wuxi, Ningbo, Changzhou – Major industrial cities

Key Features

• Fertile soils – Intensive agriculture (rice, wheat, cotton, aquaculture)
• Dense population – >150 million people in ~100,000 km²
• Economic powerhouse – ~25% of China's GDP, manufacturing, finance, shipping
• Water network – Canals, lakes, tributaries, Grand Canal terminus

It is one of the world's most densely populated and economically dynamic megalopolises.
