Do Chinese People Hate Vietnamese? No—History Shows Deep Ties

There is no basis for a generalization of hatred. China and Vietnam share:

• Two millennia of trade, tributary relations, cultural exchange (Confucianism, Buddhism, writing, cuisine).
• Modern partnership: Comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership; China is Vietnam's largest trading partner.
• Diaspora ties: Ethnic Chinese (Hoa) are integrated in Vietnamese society.

Like any neighbors, they have disputes (South China Sea, historical wars), and individual prejudice exists. But state-to-state and people-to-people relations are overwhelmingly cooperative, not hostile.
