How long has Indonesia been around?

Indonesia's history can be traced back to the earliest traces of human life on the islands, about 1.9 million years ago. Over the centuries, Indonesia has been ruled by various kingdoms and empires, including the Majapahit Empire (1293-1527) and the Srivijaya Empire (6th-13th centuries). However, the modern Republic of Indonesia was only founded on August 17, 1945, following its proclamation of independence from the Netherlands.
