Places to Tour in Japan

Japan is a fascinating country whose natural beauty, long history, and rich cultural heritage draw numerous visitors each year. There is a wealth of places to tour, including the capital city, Tokyo, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and Mount Fuji--to name but a few.
  1. Tokyo

    • Tokyo began as a modest fishing village in the 17th century.

Tokyo began as a modest fishing village in the 17th century and ultimately grew into the major metropolis it is today. The city covers an astounding 844 square miles of territory and has a population of nearly 13 million people. It is also home to many attractions, and visitors can see the city sights by bus, boat, or walking tours. Hato Bus Tours offers several tours of Tokyo, including walking tours, night tours, half-day tours, and full-day tours. The Dynamic Tokyo full-day tour is a combination tour that takes visitors on both a cruise of the Samida River and a bus tour to all the major sights in Tokyo: Tokyo Tower, Imperial Palace, Happo-en and Chinzan-so gardens, Senso-ji Temple, and the historic shopping district of Nakamise Street. This tour starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 5:00 p.m. The departure/arrival point is the Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal, although the tour company offers a pick-up/drop-off service at some hotels in the city.

    Mount Fuji

    • Mount Fuji is the highest peak in Japan.

Towering at a height of 12,388 feet, Mount Fuji is the highest peak in Japan. This active volcano, which has become a symbol of Japan, is located only 60 miles from Tokyo and can be seen clearly from the city. Several tour companies offer trips to the volcano, including Tokyo City Tour. This tour operator offers seven different excursions to Mount Fuji, including the full-day Mount Fuji Tour. Guests are picked up at their hotels at 8:30 a.m. and taken by mini-van to the Mount Fuji Visitor Center. From there, visitors are driven up to the 5th station of the mountain and then on to an ice cave, Lake Sai, and Lake Kawaguchi. From Lake Kawaguchi, visitors then enjoy a ride on the Lake Kawaguchi Mt. Tenjo Ropeway (or Mt. Kachi Kachi Ropeway, as it is also called), which is an aerial tramway that provides passengers with an inspiring view of Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi, and the surrounding area. Before heading back to Tokyo, the tour stops at the Asama Sengen shrine at the base of the mountain, arriving back in the city at approximately 7:00 p.m.

    • The A-Bomb Dome stands as a reminder of the devastation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was built in memory of those who perished in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. It opened in 1955, and in 1996 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum hosts several exhibits dealing with Hiroshima, its history, and the aftermath of the atomic bomb, including an exhibit that provides information about Hiroshima prior to the bombing, the Atomic Bombing exhibit, the Hiroshima in Ruins exhibit, the Peace Watch Tower exhibit, and others.
