The Shalimar Garden is a royal garden that was built by Emperor Jehangir in 1616 for his wife Nur Jahan. The name Shalimar means "abode of love." The emperor called the garden one of the sights of Kashmir.
The Shalimar Garden is in Srinagar, India. The royal garden faces Lake Dal. The garden is not on the lake shore but it is connected to the lake by a long canal.
Once inside the royal garden you will be able to see three terraces, sweeping vistas, streams and many different colorful flowers. The top terrace was once reserved for royal ladies.
The garden is 2,158 feet from north to south and is 846 feet east to west. Each terrace is elevated between 13 and 15 feet above each other.
Within the royal garden are 410 fountains. There are 105 fountains on the top terrace, 152 on the middle terrace and 153 on the lower terrace.
