How to Visit Jaipur, India

Jaipur--India's pink city, one-time royal capital, home to some of the world's most exciting shopping, and cradle of South Asia's best jewel artisans. Just a few hours from international hub and Indian capital New Delhi, Jaipur offers the traveler and tourist a vibrant, culturally-rich destination that holds interest for most anyone.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrive in Delhi, home to the area's largest international airport. This is almost certainly where your journey to Jaipur will begin. Round-trip economy tickets from the United States to Delhi cost between $800 and $1,500 or more, depending on time of year and air carrier.

    • 2

Decide on a bus, a train, or a car. For the really adventurous, a bus is hard to beat, as it provides you with an up-close-and-personal experience with residents and is inexpensive. To take a train, take a cab to the train station and purchase a ticket for Jaipur. Several trains leave every day for the pink city, and prices range from a few dollars for the lowest class of seat to expensive luxury compartments. If a train or a bus won't do it for you, ask your hotel to arrange a car for you to Jaipur. This will be the most expensive option, costing between $80 and $150.

    • 3

Travel from Delhi to Jaipur. The trip shouldn't take more than 4 or 5 hours, though the bus option might take several hours more, depending on the number of stops your bus makes.

    • 4

Check in to a hotel. Hotels in Jaipur range from modest accommodations costing $25 per night to large five-star hotels that cost more than $200 per night.

    • 5

See the sights! Don't miss the Amber Fort, which is typically reached on elephant-back, the Palace of the Winds, or the city's central one-time royal palace. Jaipur is also filled with vibrant markets, and its winding streets are lined with jewelry-makers. If shopping is your forte, Jaipur is your ultimate destination. The central, walled city can be seen almost entirely on foot; take a cab to visit sites beyond the wall.
