What is the Bali nine?

The Bali Nine were a group of nine Australians convicted of smuggling heroin from Indonesia in 2005. The group was arrested in Bali, Indonesia, and sentenced to death in 2006. The sentences were later commuted to life imprisonment and they were released in 2018.

The Bali Nine case attracted significant media attention and raised concerns about the harsh penalties for drug trafficking in Indonesia. The case also led to a diplomatic row between Australia and Indonesia, with Australia expressing concern about the fairness of the trial and the severity of the sentences.
