The Scarborough Shoal (Chinese: 黃岩島; pinyin: Huángyán Dǎo; Filipino: Panatag o Bañtog na Shoal), alternatively known as Scarborough Reef, is a maritime territory, claimed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), the Republic of China (ROC), and the Philippines, and situated within the South China Sea, approximately 230 kilometres (140 mi) off the coast of mainland Zambales, Philippines, and 650 kilometres (400 mi) from China's Hainan Island.
