While searching for a quicker sea route to Asia, Samuel de Champlain explored the St. Lawrence River in 1603. He founded the city of Quebec City in 1608, which would become the first permanent European settlement in Canada. Champlain's exploration and colonization of Canada laid the foundation for the development of the nation as we know it today.
