The airport opened in 1994 after the terminal, which is the largest in the world, was built on adjustable columns following significant subsidence of the island. A two-mile bridge links the airport to the mainland.
Kansai International has facilities like ATMs, currency exchange and banks, a business center, Wi-Fi, a post office, about 60 restaurants and over 100 shops. Trains and buses link the airport with Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto. There is also ferry service to Kobe Airport and Sumoto-Ko. Taxis are available, although they are expensive.
The airport is serviced by more than 50 airlines, with connections to 72 cities in 32 countries. It handles about 600 flights a week to mostly Asian destinations. About one-third of the 17 million passengers per year are Japanese.
