Kansai Airport Facts

Kansai International Airport began operations in September 1994, according to Airport-Technology.com. It is located on a man-made island located about 31 miles south of Osaka in Osaka Bay, Japan.

    • The airport is the closest international airport to Kyoto and Osaka in the Kansai region, according to TravelSmart. Kansai Airport also services Kobe, the capital of Hyogo Prefecture. More than 50 airlines use the airport.

    • The airport added a second runway in 2007 as part of its ongoing expansion and the airport was projected to handle 230,000 flights a year by 2011, according to Airport-Technology. It expanded facilities for passengers as well as cargo.
